Hockey India Awards Set for a Grand Night: Sreejesh, Savita, Harmanpreet Among Top Contenders

The excitement is building for the prestigious Hockey India annual awards ceremony, scheduled for March 31st in New Delhi. Hockey India has unveiled the much-anticipated list of nominees, and the competition promises to be fierce across various categories.

Veterans Vie for Top Honors

Seasoned performers PR Sreejesh (men’s) and Savita Punia (women’s) find themselves in contention for double honors. Both stalwarts have been nominated for Player of the Year, the most coveted award, as well as Goalkeeper of the Year. Their consistent excellence has been a cornerstone of India’s recent success, and they will be looking to add another feather to their decorated caps.

Harmanpreet Targets Double Glory

Leading the charge for the men’s team, skipper Harmanpreet Singh has also garnered double nominations. The dependable defender is shortlisted for both Player of the Year and Defender of the Year awards. His leadership and defensive solidity have been crucial for India, and fans will be eager to see if he can pull off a remarkable feat by winning both awards.

A Night of Recognition Across Categories

Beyond these top contenders, 30 other nominees will vie for recognition across eight categories. The prestigious Hockey India Major Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award, with its Rs. 30 lakh cash prize, honors individuals who have made exceptional contributions to Indian hockey. Young talent will also be celebrated, with the Jugraj Singh Award (men’s) and Asunta Lakra Award (women’s) recognizing outstanding performers under the age of 21. These awards, offering Rs. 10 lakh each, aim to inspire the next generation of hockey stars.

The remaining categories, including Defender of the Year, Midfielder of the Year, and Forward of the Year (each with a Rs. 5 lakh prize), will acknowledge the contributions of players in specific roles. As Hockey India President Dilip Kumar Tirkey highlighted, selecting the nominees was a challenging task, reflecting the remarkable performances by both the men’s and women’s teams in recent times.
