The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) is gearing up for the crucial Senior Asian Wrestling Championship and Asian Olympic Games Qualifier tournaments. On Monday, they announced trials to select the Indian teams for these events. They will be held at the K.D. Jadhav Wrestling Indoor Stadium in New Delhi from March 10-11, 2024.
Top Stars Get the Call, Including Retired Sakshi Malik
The WFI invited prominent wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, and even retired star Sakshi Malik to participate in the trials. This move comes after the United World Wrestling (UWW) lifted the five-month suspension on the WFI on February 13th.
Trials to Determine Representation in Key Tournaments
The winners of the trials will represent India in the Senior Asian Wrestling Championship in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, starting on April 11th. More importantly, they will also compete in the Asian Olympic Games Qualifier Tournament held right after, from April 19th. This qualifier will determine the wrestlers who will secure their spots at the Paris Olympics 2024 starting in July.
Intriguing Scenario with WFI and Ministry Dispute
It’s important to note that while the UWW has reinstated the WFI, the Sports Ministry still maintains its suspension on the WFI president, Sandeep Singh, and his panel. However, according to UWW rules, the WFI retains the authority to send teams to international events like the Olympics. This ongoing dispute adds another layer of complexity to the upcoming trials.
Star Wrestlers and Up-and-Coming Talent Vie for Spots
The list of invitees includes not only established stars like Bajrang (65kg freestyle), Vinesh (55kg), and Sakshi (62kg), but also Antim Panghal (54kg). She has already secured her qualification for the Paris Olympics. This creates an exciting scenario where experienced veterans will be vying for spots alongside rising stars eager to prove their mettle.
The Road to Paris Begins in Delhi
The upcoming trials in Delhi will be a crucial stage for Indian wrestlers aiming to book their tickets to the biggest sporting spectacle. With a mix of experienced veterans and rising stars in the mix, the event promises intense competition. It certainly will be closely watched by wrestling fans across the nation.
