Mohammed Shami Undergoes Surgery, Ruled Out of IPL 2024 and Likely T20 World Cup

Indian cricket fans received a blow on Monday as fast bowler Mohammed Shami underwent surgery on his right Achilles tendon in London. This effectively rules him out of the upcoming IPL 2024 season, scheduled from March 22 to May 26.

Shami’s Heroics and Ongoing Recovery

Shami hasn’t played since India’s remarkable run to the ODI World Cup final in November 2023. He displayed immense grit throughout the tournament, leading the bowling attack with a stunning 24 wickets in just seven matches, boasting an exceptional average of 10.70 and a strike rate of 12.20. However, he played through the pain, relying on injections to manage his ankle discomfort.

This injury comes as a significant setback for the Gujarat Titans, led by young skipper Shubman Gill. Shami was their leading wicket-taker in their impressive second-place finish during IPL 2023. Notably, the Titans also recently traded away Hardik Pandya to the Mumbai Indians.

Shami’s Road to Recovery

In January, Shami initially expressed confidence in recovering in time for the England Test series, acknowledging some “stiffness” in his ankle. However, a reassessment at the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy (NCA) in late January ruled him out of the Tests. He had also previously been withdrawn from the South Africa tour due to persistent ankle pain.

With Mohammed Shami sidelined India has handed Test debuts to young pacers Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep during the ongoing World Test Championship cycle. Shami hasn’t featured in any Tests since the WTC final against Australia in June 2023.

Uncertainty Looms Over T20 World Cup

Shami’s absence is also likely to extend to the upcoming T20 World Cup, which commences in the Caribbean and USA just five days after the IPL concludes. This creates a significant void in India’s bowling attack, as Shami’s experience and pace would have been invaluable in those conditions.

Wishing Mohammed Shami a Speedy Recovery

While Indian cricket grapples with Shami’s absence, the entire cricketing community wishes him a speedy recovery and a successful return to the field. His presence on the field is undoubtedly missed, and his return will be eagerly awaited.
