Veteran Indian paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal pulled off a remarkable feat at the Singapore Smash 2024, defeating World No. 13 Darko Jorgic to reach the round of 16.
Sharath Stuns Jorgic in Dominant Display at Singapore Smash 2024
Despite being ranked significantly lower (World No. 88), Sharath showcased exceptional skill and composure to overpower Jorgic of Slovenia. The final score of 3-1 (8-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-9) reflects Sharath’s dominance after a close first game loss.
This victory wasn’t Sharath’s only impressive performance. He had to fight his way through the qualifying rounds, defeating players from Romania, Japan, and Slovenia to secure his spot in the main draw. There, he continued his winning streak with a convincing 3-0 (11-5, 11-4, 11-6) victory over Chilean opponent Nicolas Burgos (World No. 31) in the round of 64.
Sharath’s Next Challenge and Mukherjee Sisters’ Exit
Sharath now sets his sights on the quarterfinals. His next opponent will be either Egyptian player Omar Assar or Korean player Lee Sang Su. With his current form, Sharath has a strong chance to continue his impressive run at the Singapore Smash 2024.
In the women’s doubles category, the Indian duo of Ayhika and Sutirtha Mukherjee couldn’t overcome the challenge of the Romanian-Spanish pair of Adina Diaconu and Maria Xiao. Despite a valiant effort, they fell short in the round of 16, losing 1-3 (4-11, 14-12, 3-11, 9-11). The Mukherjee sisters had earlier secured a thrilling 3-2 (11-8, 5-11, 3-11, 11-6, 11-9) victory over Japan’s Miu Hirano and Miwa Harimoto in the first round.
