The Indian Super League witnessed a thrilling return leg of the Kolkata derby this Sunday! Mohun Bagan SG emerged victorious against their arch-rivals East Bengal by a convincing 3-1 scoreline at the Salt Lake Stadium.
This dominant performance not only secured all three points for Mohun Bagan but also propelled them to the top of the ISL table with 36 points from 17 matches. While Mumbai City FC holds the same number of points, Mohun Bagan’s superior goal difference gives them the edge.
Turning the Tide
East Bengal started strong with a penalty opportunity in the 14th minute, but their captain, Cleiton Silva, failed to convert. This missed chance proved to be a turning point. Mohun Bagan capitalized on this momentum shift, scoring two goals before halftime through Jason Cummings and Liston Colaco, with Dimitri Petratos playing a pivotal role in both goals.
Clinical Finishing and Defensive Grit
Mohun Bagan extended their lead further in stoppage time of the first half with a penalty converted by Petratos himself after Liston Colaco was fouled inside the box.
East Bengal’s Fightback
East Bengal didn’t surrender easily. The second half saw a valiant effort from them, with a world-class goal from Spanish midfielder Saul Crespo in the 53rd minute. They continued to press for an equalizer but Mohun Bagan’s defense held firm, with goalkeeper Vishal Kaith making a crucial save against Cleiton Silva in the 63rd minute. East Bengal’s hopes for a comeback were dashed in injury time when their penalty claim was deemed a simulation by the referee.

With this victory, Mohun Bagan has not only secured bragging rights in the Kolkata derby but also cemented their position at the top of the ISL standings. East Bengal, despite their second-half fightback, remain in 18th place with 19 points.
