Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal’s run at the ATP 250 Marrakech Open ended in the round of 16. Despite a dominant first-set win against Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego, Nagal couldn’t maintain momentum, ultimately falling in three sets (1-6, 6-3, 6-4). This marked Nagal’s second consecutive defeat against the towering Italian.
Bright Spot in ATP 250 Marrakech Open Doubles
While Nagal’s singles run ended, Yuki Bhambri provided a positive note for Indian tennis. Partnering with Frenchman Albano Olivetti, Bhambri secured a convincing victory in the men’s doubles quarterfinals, defeating the Dutch-Greek duo of Bart Stevens and Petros Tsitsipas.
Encouraging Signs Despite the Loss
While Nagal’s defeat is disappointing, his strong showing in the first set against a higher-ranked opponent is a positive sign. This clay-court season has seen him display glimpses of his potential. With continued focus and training, Nagal can hopefully translate these glimpses into consistent victories.
In the meantime, Bhambri’s success in doubles reminds us of India’s depth in tennis talent. Hopefully, both Nagal and Bhambri can continue to build on their performances in the coming tournaments.
