A Historic Extension: Border-Gavaskar Trophy to be a Five-Test Saga

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy gets an upgrade! The India-Australia Test series will be a five-match affair for the first time since 1991-92.

The prestigious Border-Gavaskar Trophy, a marquee series between India and Australia, is set for a grand expansion. Cricket Australia (CA) recently announced the extension of the upcoming 2024-25 series to a five-Test format, marking the first time since the 1991-92 season that the two cricketing giants will clash in a five-match Test series.

A Joint Commitment to Test Cricket’s Legacy

The decision, a collaborative effort between the BCCI and CA, highlights the ongoing commitment of both cricketing bodies to preserving the rich heritage of Test cricket. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, in a CA media release, emphasized the importance of Test cricket, stating, “Our ongoing collaboration with Cricket Australia…underscores our collective commitment to nurturing and elevating Test cricket’s significance.” This extension reflects a shared vision to amplify the essence of Test cricket and uphold its legacy.

India’s Dominance and Australia’s Burning Desire

The upcoming series holds immense significance for both teams. In the past four encounters, India has emerged victorious on all occasions, including back-to-back series wins in Australia (2018-19 and 2020-21). However, it’s important to remember that Australia emerged triumphant in the World Test Championship final held in London last year. This five-match series provides the perfect platform for India to maintain their dominance and for Australia to reclaim their glory on home soil.

Perth to Host the Opener, Full Border-Gavaskar Trophy Schedule Soon

While the official schedule is yet to be released, Perth is confirmed to host the opening Test of the series, likely starting in late November 2024. Cricket Australia chairman Mike Baird expressed his delight at the extension, stating, “We are absolutely delighted the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has been extended to five Tests, given the intense rivalry between our two great cricketing nations and the excitement this creates.”

A Series Filled with Anticipation

The extended Border-Gavaskar Trophy promises to be a thrilling spectacle for cricket fans worldwide. Witnessing two cricketing powerhouses battle it out over five Tests will undoubtedly be a treat. With India seeking to maintain their dominance and Australia eager to reclaim their backyard supremacy, the upcoming series is poised to be an epic battle.
