Over the years, the Indian Premier League has evolved into an international contest, garnering viewership from countries all across the globe. A key reason behind IPL’s success is the destruction that comes with it. In the past few editions, we have seen an outrageous display of batting with players carving through some of the most sophisticated bowling lineups. So, if we were to ask who is the most dangerous batsman in the IPL, what would be the answer?

With countless breathtaking performances over the years, it is quite difficult to point out who is the most dangerous batsman in the IPL. To give a justified answer, here we present a list of the topmost dangerous batsmen of the Indian Premier League based on their strike rate, runs, and batting average:

Who is the Most Dangerous Batsman in the IPL?

1. Chris Gayle- Punjab Kings (PBKS)

Chris Gayle is perhaps the most dangerous T20 player of all time, and for a good reason. If we talk about his performance in the Indian Premier League, he has scored the greatest number of centuries (6), the fastest century (in 30 balls), and also smashed the greatest number of sixes (349).

The ‘Universe Boss’ has a strike rate of 150.11 even after 132 matches, a feat achieved by a very few seasoned batsmen. Moreover, with an average of 41.13, he is the perfect T20 opener, capable of giving his side an explosive start. With his destructive batting style and consistency, he is amongst the most dangerous batsmen in the IPL.

His career-defining knock in the IPL was against the Pune Warriors India when he ripped through their bowling attack scoring an unbeaten 175 in 66 balls. His monstrous century comprised 17 sixes and 13 fours, making this knock one of the best T20 performances of all time!

2. Ab de Villiers- Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)

Throw him a yorker, he’ll convert it into a full toss. Throw him a bouncer, he’ll upper-cut it to the stands. AB de Villiers is a nightmare for every IPL captain as he renders their bowling strategies useless. Known as the ‘Mr. 360’ of the cricketing world, AB de Villiers has etched his name into every IPL record.

He is the 6th highest run-scorer (4,849), the 2nd greatest smasher of maximums (235), and also has the 3rd highest individual score (133*), to name a few records. ABD is also a death over specialist, having rescued his franchise from countless no-win situations.

His top knocks were: 129 from 52 balls against the Gujarat Lions in 2017 and 133 from 59 balls against the Mumbai Indians in 2015, both of which helped RCB in crossing the finish line. Hence, the answer to who is the most dangerous batsman in the IPL can be found in Mr. 360!

3. Suresh Raina- Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

You might not see him much in the Indian Cricket Team nowadays, but he is still amongst the greatest T20 players for India. Playing the second greatest number of matches in IPL history, Suresh Raina has been retained by the Super Kings for all their editions, proving he is a great asset to their playing eleven.

The 34-year-old southpaw has smashed the 2nd highest number of runs, raking in 5,368 runs in 193 matches. With an average of 33.34 and a strike rate of 137.14, he is amongst the most dangerous batsmen in the IPL. The Yellow Lion has roared several times for CSK, with most of his knocks ending in a winning cause.

5. MS Dhoni- Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

It would be bizarre to not mention MS Dhoni when talking about who is the most dangerous batsman in the IPL. Leading the Chennai Super Kings to three title wins, he has played every possible role as a cricketer- to play cautiously when the team needs a stable innings and to play destructively if the team needs an explosive innings.

He has a total of 216 maximums to his name that make him the 8th highest run-getter of the tournament (4,632). Throughout his IPL career, he has pulled CSK and the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants from numerous situations that seemed to be impossible to win. For instance, in match 53 of IPL 2016, the Dhoni-led Rising Pune Supergiants required 23 runs off the last over.

What seemed to be an impossible target to achieve soon became possible when MSD hit three sixes and a four making Rising Pune Supergiants win in a thrilling last over match.

6. Virat Kohli- Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)

Virat Kohli might not have the highest strike rate as compared to the other players mentioned on this list. However, his perfect execution and phenomenal consistency make him amongst the most dangerous batsmen of IPL.

7. Andre Russel- Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

With the highest strike rate of 182.33, Andre Russel is amongst those players in this list whose name just pops up on its own when talking about who is the most dangerous batsman in the IPL. Why?

This is because the Jamaican all-rounder has given us some phenomenal knocks over the years that would go down in the history books of cricket. For instance, his electrifying innings of 88 runs from 36 balls against the Chennai Super Kings in 2018.
