It has only been two weeks since the start of the Indian Premier League, and boy oh boy, are we in for a thrilling competition! With two super overs, two centuries, and nail-biting finishes all the way around, the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League has marked its arrival with a bang. In this 13th fixture of the IPL, we would witness two mighty teams lock horns against each other- Kings XI Punjab v/s Mumbai Indians.
When doing a KXIP vs MI Match Preview, the first thing to talk about is how both the teams are coming into this game with fresh wounds. Kings XI Punjab in their last fixture against Rajasthan Royals set a mammoth total of 223, while batting first. However, it ended up in a lost cause, all thanks to Rahul Tewatia and his five sixes off Sheldon Cottrell’s 17th over. The Mumbai Indians on the other hand, lost their last match to the Royal Challengers Bangalore in an electrifying super over. Both teams have not performed to their full potential yet, winning just one game apiece, they will be eager to register a convincing win in this game to get their campaigns back on track.
Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians have locked horns 24 times over 12 seasons, and MI have a slight upper hand with 13 wins. Both teams have been involved in some high scoring matches over the years, and anyone doing a KXIP vs MI Match Preview will know that the same can be expected this time around too.
KXIP have wooed their fans with their batting this year. With both their openers, KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal, engaging in a healthy competition for the orange cap, the KL Rahul-led KXIP has scored 200+ scores in two of their three matches. In spite of registering a 97-run victory over the RCB, it has not been all sunshine and rainbows for the men in red as their bowling department has crippled them time and again. Be it Chris Jordan leaking 56 runs against DC or Sheldon Cottrell going for 30 runs in an over against RR, KXIP lacks a death over specialist. However, with the right tweaks in their playing eleven, they can bounce back into the tournament with a bang!
The performance of Mumbai Indians in this season can be called below par. With their opening pair being a little inconsistent, a bulk of their runs come from their middle order. Though they registered a 49-run victory over the KKR, their batting, fielding, and bowling departments are yet to function in harmony. One big reason behind their losses this season is the high economy rate of Jasprit Bumrah. The 26-year-old is seen as the world’s best death overs bowler, but he has taken just three wickets at an economy rate of 9.75. The likes of Quentin de Kock will also have to come good soon, with Chris Lynn waiting on the bench to take his spot at the top of the order. MI have a track record of making a comeback in the middle of the season, so we are in for an exciting ride!
The Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi does not offer a flat batting track like in Sharjah, and plays a bit more balanced. Hence, bowlers are likely to get more joy on this pitch. Taking into account, the last 12 T20s played here, the team batting first must aim for anywhere between 160-180.
